When they first appeared the Class 60s were not well liked by enthusiasts, particularly as their introduction saw numbers of older engines withdrawn and their impressive pulling power lead in many cases to longer but fewer trains.
Nowadays, of course, the "Tugs", as they are nicknamed, have a big following as they have become the last indigenous diesel class and the remaining interest in an otherwise DMU and "Shed" dominated railway.
Having started to become an endangered species during the early part of 2005, numbers were back up to 85 in traffic out of 100 by the end of October. However, it remains to be seen what future they have with EWS. One can only speculate what might have been if BR and Brush had continued the development of the type and we had not sold the family silver off to the yanks...
